Ok I seem to be having a problem with the fan noise in this HP 1720n. It all started about 2 weeks ago and happens sporatically. The funny thing is sometimes when it gets noisy, I will open the cover and then it gets quiet again or when I attempt to move the computer to get a better look the noise will stop. If the noise is on and I restart the computer I will get a "System Fan Failure" Message but the computer still runs fine and both fans are operational. I am very very confused as to what is going on.

I took it in today and the guy who took a look at the computer mentioned that there is usually a white substance between the fan and the motherboard thats he couldn't see, so im wondering if that melted away, or if it was there to begin with. Is this something that I should replace?

Any ideas to this would be helpful as im really confused
