Keyboard and mouse

[SIZE="2"][FONT="Lucida Console"][COLOR="Sienna"][/COLOR][/FONT][/SIZE] I hve a dell with XP and just recently my keyboard and mouse are not working when I start up. I have tried a new mouse. I was told to try keyboard and mouse with usb and if that doesn't work that I need a new motherboard. Is that true? Is there another way to fix it? I have not had the computer but 2 years.
